Theater of Change

The Theater of Change is a groundbreaking methodology developed as a collaboration between the Broadway Advocacy Coalition and the Center for Institutional and Social Change at Columbia Law School.

The process brings together high-level artists, law and policy students and experts, and directly impacted advocates to deepen connections and bridge gaps of disconnect and lack of understanding. Participants ultimately collaborate as equal partners to create arts-based performance pieces that have an engagement strategy to target specific areas and policies. The methodology hinges on centering directly impacted individuals, their communities and their lived experiences in policy discourse and decision-making, leading to empathy-driven policies. The policy areas of focus include educational equity, reframing reentry, political participation, and immigration.

The Theater of Change methodology brings together Broadway caliber artists, legal and policy experts, and directly impacted advocates to employ rigorous storytelling to push for just policies. The methodology aims to build a world in which policies are driven by the experiences of those most they most directly affect, and believes in the integral role of artists in communicating these experiences broadly and powerfully.
